Preparation of polycrystalline tungsten nanofibers by needleless electrospinning

One-dimensional metal nanostructures are of great interest for applications in electronic and micromechanical devices, solar cells, sensors, heterogeneous (photo)catalysts. We describe the multigram preparation method nanoscopic tungsten fibers (diameter 107 ± 49 nm) first time. The material was prepared by needleless electrospinning from an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol silicotungstic acid solution. A green fibrous composite mat calcined air to WO3/SiO2 further reduced forming gas at various temperatures (500–1000 °C). reduction process proceeded nanofibrous blue oxide mixtures oxides with metallic finally 800 °C pure W form polycrystalline fibers. These nanofibers consist individual nanoparticles covered interconnected amorphous silica. All materials were characterized TG-DSC, TG-DTA, SEM, TEM, STEM-EDS, XRD methods. This optimized fabrication could be scaled up supply ample amounts future applications.
